GILBERT G. KOVELMAN earned his B.S. in electrical engineering from Cooper Union in New York in 1956 and his J.D. from George Washington University in 1960. He is experienced in a broad range of U.S. and foreign patent, trademark and complex technology matters. These areas involve all aspects of prosecution, licensing and litigation, including presentation before the International Trade Commission.
Mr. Kovelman's areas of legal practice include evaluation, protection and exploitation of all types of intellectual property, including business strategies for technology-based companies. He is primarily active in technical areas dealing with multi-media, games and gambling machines, computers, electronics, optics, photography and medical technology. Mr. Kovelman has also acted as an expert witness in many intellectual property cases. In addition, Mr. Kovelman has lectured on intellectual property at the University of Southern California. Mr. Kovelman is also an IP Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association since 1996.
Mr. Kovelman joined the firm as an associate in 1961, and became a partner in 1967. Before joining the firm, he was an Examiner in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from 1956 to 1959. From 1959 to 1961, he was patent Advisor to the Bureau of Naval Weapons and Office of Naval Research where he was responsible for intellectual property matters relating to fire control systems, missile guidance systems and aeroballistics.
Mr. Kovelman is admitted to practice in California, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the State Bar of California, Los Angeles County Bar Association, American Bar Association, Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association, San Fernando Valley and International Bar Associations, American Intellectual Property Law Association, Licensing Executive Society, International Federation of Industrial Property Attorneys, U.S. (FICPI), American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautic and the Mensa Society.
