JAMES W. PAUL earned his degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio State University in 1961 and his Juris Doctor from Northrop University in 1979. He is a licensed professional engineer in the State of California. Mr. Paul specializes in the prosecution and litigation of patent, trademark and copyright matters, with concentration in the high technology fields, including electronics, medical systems, optics, lasers, computers, software and advanced vehicle systems.
Mr. Paul joined the firm as a partner in 1986. Before joining the firm, he was intellectual property counsel responsible for the Space and Technology Group of TRW. Before obtaining his law degree, he was a project manager and line manager with TRW, and was with Aerospace Corporation and Rockwell International. Mr. Paul has a broad range of experience in most of the technologies related to spacecraft, aircraft, propulsion systems and high performance land vehicles. He was responsible for developing many advanced simulation techniques for such systems, having been project manager for the project Apollo simulators, and part of the original design team for GPS, and project manager for many ballistic missile sensor and computer systems. He has assisted in licensing of technology and negotiation of technology development agreements between major corporations. Since beginning the practice of law, Mr. Paul has prosecuted and litigated patents, trademarks and copyrights in many technologies, including scientific instruments, medical devices, animal and human vaccines and health treatments, and computer related technologies. In addition to his legal and technical activities, Mr. Paul is an active instrument pilot.
Mr. Paul is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the State Bar of California, Los Angeles County Bar Association, American Bar Association, Los Angeles Patent Law Association, Federal and International Bar Association and Los Angeles and American Intellectual Property Law Associations.
