DAVID J. PITMAN specializes in the prosecution and litigation of patent, trademark and copyright matters. He has been involved in a number of lawsuits, at both the trial and the appellate level, in which he has been responsible for matters relating to all aspects of the case. Mr. Pitman recently helped successfully defend against a multi-million dollar claim against one of the firm's clients, a result confirmed on appeal. His focus in prosecution has covered a broad range of technologies including mechanical and electro-mechanical arts, and the medical sciences. His broad experience also extends to conducting clearance studies and rendering opinions concerning patent validity and infringement.

Mr. Pitman is a member of the South African Counsel of Professional Engineers, and has five years' experience as a consulting engineer, during which time he was involved in a wide range of civil and structural projects, including work on the Thames Barrier, London. Mr. Pitman also has seven years' experience at the South African Bar, and three years' experience in the litigation department of Latham & Watkins, Orange County.

Mr. Pitman received his B.S. (Engineering) degree from the University of Cape Town in 1975 (cum laude), and his J.D. from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1987. He also received an MA in economics from the University of Oxford in 1979 where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
